USAID and Philippine Partners Celebrate Achievements
in Promoting the Environment and Clean Energy

To continue their cooperation in environment and energy sectors, the two governments last year signed an agreement providing the Philippines nearly $73 million in grant for programs that involve, among other areas, the mitigation of climate change and 100% electrification of the Philippines.

Ambassador Kenney and officials of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) met with U.S. government partners in the Philippine public and private sectors in Taguig City on September 15 to celebrate their achievements in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable energy. Students in native costume present a dance number that tells a story on the environment during the September 15 meeting of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and its Philippine partners to celebrate their achievements in promoting sustainable energy and clean environment. Since 2002, a USAID-funded program provided electricity through the use of solar photo-voltaic and micro-hydro systems to more than 40% of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, representing more than 4,000 villages affected by the armed conflicts in the southern Philippine region. Last year, the U.S. and Philippine governments signed an agreement providing nearly $73 million in grant over the next six years to assist environment and energy programs in the Philippines, including 100% electrification of the country.
Ambassador Kenney gives her remarks at the September 15 meeting of the USAID and its Philippine partners in Sustainable Energy Development Program (SEDP) to celebrate the partnership’s achievements. She noted that the energy agenda of the U.S. government and the Philippine government are similar, marked by initiatives in biofuels, renewable energy, and combating climate change. Through USAID’s Clean Air Project and SEDP, U.S. government helped the passage of the Philippine Biofuels and Renewable Energy Acts and its Implementing Rules and Regulations as well as the implementation of reforms to help Philippines reach its target of more than 50% energy self-sufficiency level by 2007. In September last year, the U.S. and Philippine governments signed a new agreement that will grant nearly $73 million over the next six years for environment and energy programs.
