USS George Washington Reaffirms Strong U.S.-Philippines Ties During August 11-14 Goodwill Visit

An exchange of smiles bridges the age and language gaps between a young patient of the Florencio V. Bernabe Jr. Memorial Hospital and an officer of the USS George Washington. In a four-day goodwill visit that highlighted the strong and historic relations between the Philippines and the United States, a group of the ship’s crew visited the hospital in Paranaque and distributed gifts to patients, while others participated in various community development and outreach projects in Metro Manila and planted trees at the Capas National Shrine in Tarlac Province.

In a visit to the school on August 14, a group of the ship’s crew helped prepare and serve food for the students and assisted in classroom activities. In other communities of Metro Manila, groups from the ship’s crew helped paint schools and hospital buildings, constructed school libraries, read and discussed pro-environment stories to school children, participated in an outreach on tuberculosis and flu prevention, and planted trees at a shrine that honors heroes of the Bataan Death March in World War II.

The Shrine honors thousands of American and Filipino prisoners of war who suffered or perished along the 60-mile forced march from the battle grounds of Bata’an to the prison camps in Tarlac during World War II. During the USS George Washington’s goodwill visit from August 11-14, its crew members participated in various community development and outreach activities in Metro Manila’s cities of Taguig, Navotas, Quezon, Manila, and Marikina.
