In Cebu, Ambassador Kenney Launches American Food Fest, Meets with Mayors of Coastal Municipalities and Am Cham

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney (right) and Joachim Schutte (left), general manager of the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Cebu, cut a giant hamburger to launch the Fourth of July American Food Festival at hotel on June 28. Joining them are U.S. Honorary Consul John Domingo (second, right) and Paul Fluty, American Chamber of Commerce President (second, left). The food festival, according to the Ambassador, was a festive celebration to commemorate not only the 233rd anniversary of America’s Independence but also the great friendship between the U.S. and the Philippines. In the same visit to the central Philippines’ premier city, Ambassador Kenney attended the opening ceremonies of a national conference of coastal municipalities, and met with the board of trustees of the American Chamber of Commerce’s Cebu chapter.

The Ambassador was guest of honor at the Fourth of July American Food Festival held at the Shangri-La Resort and Spa in Mactan, Cebu. The occasion, according to the Ambassador, is another example of the vibrant agricultural trade relationship between our two countries. The United States is the Philippines’ largest agricultural export market while the Philippines is the 13th largest market for U.S. food and agricultural products and is one of the U.S.’s most important markets in Southeast Asia for U.S. food and agricultural products.

In her remarks on the United States’ solidarity with Philippine municipal mayors in safeguarding Philippine coastal resources, the Ambassador mentioned that as part of the U.S. Government’s commitment with the Coral Triangle Initiative, the U.S. will be assisting with the implementation of regional and national capacity building efforts in sustainable fisheries, coastal community adaptation to climate change, and marine protected area management.

In a roundtable discussion at the Waterfront Hotel, the Am Cham chapter’s officers apprised the Ambassador of the business climate and prospects in Cebu. The local Am Cham has 80 members comprising most of the major American companies in the Greater Cebu Area. Some 35,000 local residents are employed in American companies in Cebu.
