USS Ronald Reagan Sailors Join AFP Service Members in Panay Civic Work to Commemorate 2008 Disaster and Relief Partnership in the Wake of Typhoon Frank

A sailor from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and a Philippine Navy serviceman team up to ferry mixed concrete to a building that U.S. and Philippine troops were renovating at the Pavia National High School in Iloilo Province during the carrier’s goodwill visit to central Philippines’ Panay Island on June 21. A year ago, the Reagan, its five support ships and more than a dozen helicopters teamed up with the Philippine military in providing relief to Panay residents who were affected by the devastating Typhoon Frank. The partnership delivered nearly 520 thousand pounds of rice, fresh water and medical supplies to the typhoon victims. Eighteen sailors from the Reagan, including an Iloilo native and graduate of the Pavia school, visited the town June 21 to join Philippine soldiers in a civic action that commemorated their 2008 partnership.

The visit commemorates the Reagan’s participation in delivering tons of food, water and medical supplies to the island in the wake of Typhoon Frank, which devastated Pavia and many areas of Panay Island. More than a thousand people, including many of the passengers of an ill-fated inter-island passenger ship, perished in the 2008 typhoon, which also rendered more than a million homeless in central and northern Philippines.

The carrier anchored in international waters off the central Philippines island on June 21 for its sailors to visit Pavia, one of the island’s towns that was among recipients of the relief goods that the Reagan helped deliver to Panay in the wake of the typhoon. In June, 2008, the typhoon rendered over a million residents of central and northern Philippine homeless and killed more than a thousand people, including many of the passengers of an ill-fated inter-island passenger ship.

From the Reagan, which was anchored off Panay Island, 18 sailors from the Reagan were flown to Iloilo and proceeded to the town of Pavia to assist personnel from the Philippine Navy renovate buildings of the town’s high school. Geroche is an Iloilo native and a graduate from the Pavia National High School in 2002. The Reagan’s June 21 visit to Panay was sentimental for the carrier as well. In June 2008, the U.S. Navy carrier teamed up with the Philippine military and delivered food, water and medical supplies to the victims of Typhoon Frank on Panay Island.
