USAID-Assisted Off-Grid Mindanao Electrification Program Celebrates 7th year

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney (right) and USAID-Philippines Director Jon Lindborg (left) congratulate Saima Sadule of Barangay Kabuling in Pandag, Maguindanao Province after the 12-year old spoke about how the electrification of her village through the USAID-assisted Alliance for Mindanao Off-Grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) Program has helped in her studies and in winning district and division levels of quiz bee competitions in science and mathematics. USAID, the Philippine Department of Energy and private energy sector firms that partner on the AMORE project celebrated the program’s seventh anniversary on June 9. Since 2004, the AMORE Program has given access to distance education to over 30,000 students by energizing more than 220 rural schools in Mindanao, bringing the total renewable energy-powered schools by AMORE to 300 since 2002.
Representatives of Mindanao villages that have been provided electricity through AMORE receive plaques of “Energized Mindanao” from Ambassador Kenney during the June 9 ceremony in Manila to celebrate the seventh year of the USAID-assisted Alliance for Mindanao Off-Grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) Program. AMORE has provided electric light to more than 8,000 households in more than 270 villages in conflict-affected and other areas of Mindanao. Despite AMORE’s successes, Mindanao remains the least energized in the country, with 454 of its villages still without access to electricity, and 271 of those villages are in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Representatives of AMORE-beneficiary villages identify for Ambassador Kenney their barangays and towns that have been provided electricity through renewable solar and micro-hydro electrification systems of the AMORE Program. Often taken for granted in cities, electricity is a precious and scarce resource in most rural areas of southern Philippines.
