U.S. Ambassador Kenney Visits Youth Camp for Peace in Zamboanga City, Participates in Brigada Eskwela, and Launches One Woman Initiative Grant for Mindanao Group

United States Ambassador Kristie Kenney and some of the more than 100 Muslim, Christian and Lumads participants in the Mindanao Youth Camp for Peace and Understanding pose for a photo during a break in the camp’s morning session. The Ambassador visited the gathering of the youth from various provinces of Mindanao on June 4. The camp, organized through a partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ayala Foundation, aims for form lasting bonds among participants from various faiths and backgrounds, and to develop values, attitudes, and skills that will enable and empower them to demonstrate tolerance of cultural and religious differences.

The OWI is a joint public-private effort that supports existing initiatives in countries with large Muslim populations and focuses on key empowerment issues including justice, opportunity, and leadership. The initiative is engaging private corporations, the Department of State, and USAID in mobilizing approximately $100 million dollars over a five year period, to empower women to achieve global impact in Muslim countries.

The Ambassador joined members of the Taluksangay barangay and participants in a USAID-sponsored Mindanao Youth Camp for Peace in painting a classroom as part of the Brigada Eskwela, an annual event when government and private sectors get together to prepare school facilities before the start of the new school year.
