(BALIKATAN) MEETING THE CHILDREN: OLONGAPO CITY, Republic of the Philippines (April 19, 2009). Sailors from Amphibious Squadron Eleven (PHIBRON-11) and the Philippine Navy watch a demonstration of traditional Filipino dance performed by students of Kalalake Elementary School during a community relations project as part of Exercise Balikatan 2009 (BK09). The participants also painted school buildings and donated toys and cookware to the school, which focuses on special-needs children. BK09 is an annual, combined, joint-bilateral exercise involving U.S. Military and Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel as well as subject-matter experts from Philippine Civil Defense Agencies. BK09 is the 25th in the series of these exercises, directed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and requested by the Government of the Republic of the Philippines. PHIBRON-11, commanded by Captain Donald A. Schmieley, is the U.S. Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious squadron. PHIBRON-11 consists of the flagship USS Essex (LHD 2), alternate flagship.
