U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Manila Assist WWII Veterans for New Benefit

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney greets Filipino World War II veterans and their relatives who came to the Embassy February 19 to file their claim for the new lump-sum benefit under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the economic stimulus package that President Barack Obama signed into law on February 17. The Act formally recognizes the service of Filipino WWII veterans as active military service in the Armed Forces for purposes of this law.
U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney chats with Filipino World War II veterans and their relatives who came to the U. S. Embassy February 19 to file their claim for the new lump-sum benefit under the economic stimulus package that President Barack Obama signed into law on February 17. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Manila Regional Office pays nearly $100 million per year in benefits to Filipino veterans or their survivors. The new lump sum benefit will bring to about $120 million in payments to eligible Filipino World War II veterans residing in the Philippines.
Wheel chairs await Filipino veterans at the receiving area that the U.S. Embassy set up the day after President Barack Obama signed into law on February 17 a new economic stimulus package that formally recognizes the service of Filipino WWII veterans as active military service in the Armed Forces for purposes of this law. The new law also authorized the provision of a new one-time lump-sum benefit for the veterans. Aside from setting up a center at the Embassy for processing the claims, the Department of Veterans Affairs Manila Regional Office also set up 14 centers throughout the Philippines in coordination with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office.
