U.S. Ambassador and Zamboanga Mayor Break Ground for New Birthing Center, Open Book Fair in Zamboanga

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney, Mayor Celso Lobregat, Hospital Chief Dr. Romeo A. Ong, Western Mindanao Command Chief Lt. Gen. Nelson Allaga, and JSOTF-P Commander Col. William Coultrup, break ground on a new Birthing Clinic construction project. The center is a collaborative effort of Joint Special Operations Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Mein College and the Zamboanga City Medical Center. This four-party project will provide a holistic health care package, consisting of the building facility, basic maternity and postpartum care and birthing services for citizens in the southern Philippine region, as well as training for future health care professionals specializing in maternal and child care services.
U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Mayor Celso Lobregat of Zamboanga City ring the bell to officially open the book fair held at the Tetuan Central Elementary School in Zamboanga. Three hundred teachers from over one hundred schools in Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi Tawi participated in the distribution of over a quarter of a million books. Teachers were the driving force, making selections on behalf of their students, thereby making sure that the right books are donated to the right schools.
On the first day of the 74th National Book Week, U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Mayor Celso Lobregat celebrate with the students of the Tetuan Central Elementary School after a book reading session. The Ambassador and the Mayor spent time reading with the children during a visit to their school to emphasize the importance of education.
U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Zamboanga Mayor Celso Lobregat become co-teachers at the Tetuan Central Elementary School where model teaching strategies were being shared during a U.S. sponsored book fair in Zamboanga. The book fair is part of a comprehensive education program where the U.S. government works with the Philippine Government and local groups to improve education in Mindanao.
