University of the Philippines Names New Hibiscus Hybrid After U.S. Ambassador

University of the Philippines-Los Banos Chancellor Dr. Luis Rey I. Velasco presents to U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney a potted Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Kristie Kenney, a new hybrid of the tropical plant gumamela that was developed at the university’s Institute of Plant Breeding.
The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Kristie Kenney, a new hybrid of the tropical plant hibiscus, locally known as “gumamela,” that was developed at the University of the Philippines – Los Banos (UPLB) Institute of Plant Breeding and named after U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney. The university, led by UPLB Chancellor Dr. Luis Rey I. Velasco, conferred the honor on the Ambassador in a ceremony at the Los Banos campus on November 17.

Ambassador Kenney poses for a picture with Dr. Pablito M. Magdalita of the University of the Philippines – Los Banos (UPLB) Institute of Plant Breeding. Dr. Magdalita created the new breed of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis that was made public in a ceremony on November 17. With the concurrence of the UPLB Chancellor Velasco, College of Agriculture Dean Dr. Domingo Angeles, and Institute of Plant Breeding Director Dr. Jose R. Hernandez, Dr. Magdalita named his creation after the U.S. Ambassador. Behind them is a bouquet of various hibiscus hybrids developed in the university, with Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Kristie A.Kenney as centerpiece.
