Police Officers in Sulu and Palawan Complete U.S. Government-Sponsored Courses in Basic Police Operations, Investigation and Community Relations

The donation was presented to the city during the November 7 graduation of 34 Puerto Princesa policewomen from a basic crime scene investigation course sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. All the graduates were attached to women and children’s concerns desk throughout Palawan. A day earlier in Jolo, 60 Sulu policemen and policewomen completed another U.S. Government-sponsored course in basic police operations and community relations.

All graduates of the course are investigators attached to the PNP women’s and children’s concerns desks throughout Palawan Province. In addition to U.S. Department of Justice funding for the course, the U.S. Embassy also donated to the Puerto Princesa Police Department a crime scene investigation kit and instructional equipment.

This was the sixth gradation of the Basic Police Operations course taught at Camp Bautista as part of a joint partnership between the Sulu Provincial Philippine National Police (PNP), the U.S. Dept. of Justice International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program, the AFP Task Force Comet, and the U.S. Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippine. With General Verzosa are (from left): Sulu Governor Abdusakur M. Tan, U.S. Department of Justice Senior Law Enforcement Advisor Richard Miller, and Lt. Col. Chad Clark of the U.S. Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P).
The 60 Sulu policemen and policewomen await their turn to receive from Philippine National Police Chief General Verzosa and PNP Director for Human Resources & Doctrine Development Director German Doria their certificates of completion of the Basic Police Operation and Community Relations course during a ceremony at the Notre Dame Junior College in Jolo City on November 6. Sponsored by the U.S. Department Justice, the course included breaking the participants into teams to go out and interview local residents on their perception of the police and to ask how the police could better serve the community. The course was designed to enhance professionalism in the Sulu PNP and provide 300 Sulu police officers solid foundation for advanced law enforcement skills.
