Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones Visits Tawi-Tawi, Leads Groundbreaking for Runway Improvement and Bridge-Road Construction Projects

U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones gets acquainted with students of the Panglima Arasia Elementary School in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi during a break in the October 21 ceremony where he and Petron Vice President Jose Jesus Laurel turned over to the school two classrooms that were built under a partnership between the USAID and the oil company Petron, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. The new classrooms are complete with student desks, teachers’ furniture and related amenities. The partners will build 60 new classrooms and refurbish 480 existing schools throughout the ARMM, Zamboanga Peninsula and Central Mindanao.

The P172-million project will extend and widen the runway and replace asphalt sections with concrete. It will also allow operation by larger aircraft used by major airlines and increase the passenger and cargo traffic to support the economic development of the province. Joining Mr. Jones and Gov. Students and teachers of Lapid Lapid School in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi join U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones (middle, back) in a photo in front of the school building renovated jointly by American and Filipino troops. The renovations, funded by the U.S. Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines, included laying a solid concrete foundation, replacing the entire roof, segregating the classrooms for different grade levels and provision of a comfort room.
Bongao municipal government’s female staff members take a photo op with U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones during a break at the October 21 launching of the project to upgrade the Sanga-Sanga Road. The upgrade is part of a bigger Tawi-Tawi bridge-road project that the U.S. Agency for International Development is undertaking in partnership with the highways and public works departments of the Philippine national government and of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. During the same visit to Tawi-Tawi, Mr. Jones also joined Governor Sadikul Sahali in leading the groundbreaking for a P172-million U.S. government-assisted project to improve the runway of the Sanga-Sanga Airport in Bongao.
