Ambassador Kenney Visits Jolo, Launches U.S. – RP Partnership Projects to Upgrade Jolo Airport and Water District System

Ambassador Kristie Kenney (2nd from right) and Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan (3rd from left) lead the groundbreaking for the Jolo runway improvement project. The airport project is a partnership among the Department of Transportation and Communications, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, Sulu provincial government and USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program. It will upgrade the runway to ensure safer airport operations and higher-capacity air linkages between Jolo and the rest of the country. Joining them for the ceremony on October 14 were (l-r): USAID Mission Director Jon Lindborg, Vice Governor Lady Ann Sahidula, and Undersecretary Nabil Tan of the Office of the Presidential Advisor on the Peace Process.
Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan and U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney ride a backhoe tractor during the groundbreaking for a U.S. government-assisted project to improve the runway of Jolo’s airport. The upgrade will replace and widen the asphalt runway, and extend it from 1,200 meters to 1,845 meters to ensure safer airport operations and high-capacity linkages between Sulu and the rest of the country.

The school is piloting a reading program initiated by the U.S. government-funded Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills (EQuaLLs) 2 Project and its partner, the Synergia Foundation. The Ambassador also presented the school with several boxes of books to complement the school’s reading program.

EQuaLLs assists 29 schools in Jolo.

The school has 1,066 elementary grade students and is one of the 29 schools in Jolo that receives assistance from USAID’s Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills (EQuaLLs) 2 Project.
Ambassador Kenney and Sulu Governor Tan (left) lead the groundbreaking for Jolo’s water district upgrading project during the Ambassador’s visit to Jolo on October 14. The project is a partnership among the Sulu provincial government, Local Water Utilities Administration, Jolo Mainland Water District (JMWD), and USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program. It will include upgrading the existing pumping system, constructing a 200-cubic meter concrete reservoir, installing transmission pipelines totaling 2.5 km, and replacing distribution pipelines and defective meters. The upgraded system will provide potable running water to approximately 70,000 residents of Jolo and adjacent barangays in Indanan and Patikul. With the Ambassador and Gov. Tan are: Daniel Landingin (right), JMWD interim board chairman; and Margot Ellis, USAID Deputy Administrator for Asia (2nd, right).
Jolo Mayor Hussin U. Amin (left) joins Ambassador Kenney (center) and Sulu Governor Tan (2nd, right) in breaking the ground for a modern Jolo fire department building that will serve approximately 150,000 Jolo residents. The facility will be constructed with funding assistance from the Joint Special Operations Task Force - Philippines and with manpower and technical assistance from Philippine and U.S. troops.
Ambassador Kenney joins an impromptu dance number by guests and female staffers of the Jolo fire department during the groundbreaking for the Joint Special Operations Task Force - Philippines funded construction of a new fire department building in Jolo. During a visit to Sulu Province’s capital on October 14, the Ambassador also joined local government officials in launching U.S.-assisted a village reading project, and projects to upgrade Jolo airport’s runway and Jolo’s water district system.
