Ambassador and Gawad Kalinga Children Toss the Ceremonial Ball Kicking Off the 2008 PBA Season

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and two children from the Gawad Kalinga Laura Village in Quezon City make the ceremonial toss at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Season at the Araneta Coliseum on October 4. As part of a new U.S. program reaching out to Filipino youth, Ambassador Kristie Kenney brought 20 children from the Gawad Kalinga village to the opening a new PBA season for a closer look and appreciation of the Philippines’ most popular sport. The week before, the Ambassador brought two teams of young basketball players from Taguig City’s Maharlika Village to a practice game of the PBA team Purefoods Giants.
Twenty 20 children from Gawad Kalinga Laura Village in Quezon City along with Ambassador Kenney cheer the Coca Cola and Talk-n-Text teams during the game that opened the Philippine Basketball Association’s 2008 season at the Araneta Coliseum on October 4. The Ambassador brought the children to the game as part of a U.S. government program to reach out to the youth. The week before Ambassador Kenney brought two teams of children basketball players to a practice game of the Purefoods Giant so the children could meet professional basketball stars and receive on-court tips from them.
