Ambassador Kenney Turns Over U.S.-Assisted Rural Electrification Facilities and Donated Books during Zamboanga del Sur Visit

AMORE provided the village of Langilan with communal lighting facilities, in partnership with the Philippine Department of Energy under the Sustainable Solar Market Package (SSMP) Plan. The joint electrification project of the USAID and the Philippine Department of Energy has garnered considerable financial support from private partners, including Mirant Philippines Foundation, and the American firm Sun Power.
Ambassador Kenney encourages students to study hard and thanks the teachers for their dedication to their work at the turnover of approximately 12,000 books to 37 school libraries in Mindanao’s conflict-affected areas. The Children International Foundation of the U.S. donated the books which are being distributed through the USAID-assisted Education Awareness Support Effort (EASE) project. EASE works to increase public awareness of the problems facing education in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and neighboring conflict-affected areas of Mindanao (CAAM), and to mobilize local and parental support to try to address some of the problems.
Ambassador Kenney is greeted by children dressed in native costumes who welcomed her on her arrival in Pagadian City airport in Mindanao’s Zamboanga del Sur Province on May 29. During her visit, the Ambassador led the turnover of the USAID-assisted lighting facilities for villages in Barangay Langilan, presented approximately 12,000 donated books for the libraries of 37 schools in region, and spoke at the province’s First Provincial Coastal Resources Management Summit in Pagadian City.
