Ambassador Kristie Kenney Visits Davao, Highlights U.S. Education and Environment Activities

Ambassador Kristie Kenney, along with Antonio O. Floriendo Sr., inaugurates the new Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) offices in Davao City. GEM recently began its third phase of projects in Mindanao that are funded by USAID. The Philippine and U.S. governments continue to work together to improve the lives of the people of Mindanao by developing infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities.

Ambassador Kenney poses with kids who are members of the newest chapter of the Clean Air Youth Alliance (CAYA) initiative. CAYA is a grouping of youth organizations united by their goal to promote clean air, both through individual initiatives as well as joint efforts. CAYA receives funding from USAID and has a total of about 34 youth organizations reaching an estimated 10,000 young adults throughout the Philippines.
Ambassador Kenney makes a new friend with one of the local birds of prey during a tour of the Philippine Eagle Foundation given by Dennis Salvador, the Philippine Eagle Foundation Executive Director. The successful Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), which previously received U.S. funding, is an NGO dedicated to saving the Philippine Eagle, the Philippines’ national bird and the world’s second largest bird of prey.
During her visit to the Mars Cocoa Development Center at the Puentespina Farm in Malagos, Davao, Ambassador Kenney planted a symbolic orchid tree marking her visit to the center. The center is a private-public partnership with U.S.-based company, MARS Inc. It seeks to demonstrate the positive aspects of cocoa production and suitability of cocoa for the Philippines.
Ambassador Kenney watches as a group of farmers learn a new technique in cocoa farming at the Mars Cocoa Development Center in Malagos, Davao. The center is a private-public partnership with U.S.-based company, MARS Inc.
Ambassador Kenney hits the gong, the signature symbol of Bombo Radyo network, at DXMF Bombo Radyo radio station. Ambassador Kenney was interviewed by Janilo Rubiato along with Bombo stations in Cebu, Baguio, Zamboanga, Tacloban, Naga, Cotabato, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, and Makati City in Manila. The nationwide interview received broad coverage and discussed a range of issues from U.S. assistance in Mindanao to the upcoming visit of the USNS Mercy to Cotabato and Samar.
Ambassador Kenney visits the local market in Davao during her May 19 – 20 visit where she launched a U.S. funded Mindanao teachers’ workshop focused on science and environment training as well as participated in the Clean Air Youth Alliance launch at Ateneo de Davao University
