Ambassador Kenney Visits American Businesses in Cagayan de Oro

Ambassador Kristie Kenney shops for fresh produce at the Northern Mindanao Vegetable Producers Association (NorMinVeggies) Consolidation Center in Cagayan de Oro. The Center serves as a wholesale market and trading outlet for NorMinVeggies’ members. USAID assists NorMinVeggies to increase the export of fruits and vegetables from Mindanao to Cebu and Manila.

On April 30, Ambassador Kenney attended the Strong Republic Nautical Highway Conference hosted by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. President Arroyo and her Cabinet traveled to Cagayan de Oro via a network of Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships that rely upon small terminals in coastal communities and cities throughout the Philippines. The majority of the network of terminals, feeder roads, and commercial routes that make up the Ro-Ro network were financed with Filipino public and private sector resources. Since 2001, USAID has provided policy support on the nationwide development of the Ro-Ro network.

McDonalds is one of a number of American businesses operating in Cagayan de Oro. In October 2007, the U.S. Commercial Service and the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce partnered to organize the American Showcase 2007 as part of the Chamber’s “Oro Best Expo 2007.” Sixteen U.S. firms participated in the event that highlighted business and investment opportunities throughout Mindanao.

In 1942, General MacArthur landed at this site en route to the Del Monte runway in Bukidnon province to escape to safety in Australia. It was in Australia where he famously declared: “Upon orders of the President of the United States, I came through the Japanese blockade, and I shall return.”
