Ambassador Kenney Visits Government Research Centers for Rice and Carabao in Nueva Ecija

Ambassador Kristie Kenney gets a close look at a rice variety being grown in the experimental farm of the Philippine Rice Research Institute, which since the 1990s has helped develop more than 80 high-yielding pest- and disease-resistant rice varieties for various farm conditions in the country. During the March 11 trip to the Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija, the Ambassador also visited the Philippine Carabao Center, the 18-year old government research agency that focuses on conserving and propagating the carabao not just as the farmer’s main work animal but also as source of high quality milk and hide.

U.S. assistance provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s PL 480 Food Aid Program helps fund PhilRice’s operational, staff training and capacity building costs.
With its highest attendance ever, farmers, rice researchers and members of agriculture advocacy groups listen to presentations at the 21st National Rice R&D Conference held at the PhilRice auditorium in Nueva Ecija. Ambassador Kenney, in her remarks to the participants, noted: “Two-thirds of this country’s population depends on farming for its livelihood. You, in the truest sense, feed the nation.”
Ambassador Kenney views some of the dairy products produced at the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) at the Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija Province during a visit on March 11. Dr. Libertado Cruz, PCC executive director, led the Ambassador in a tour of the center, which receives some U.S. funding assistance. Established in 1992, the PCC has the primary task of developing and propagating good quality Philippine carabao stocks not only for use as farm animal, but also as a major source of dairy.
