Ambassador Kenney visits Balikatan
and USAID projects in Marawi

Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Rafia Adiong (right), wife of Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Adiong, Jr., cut the ribbon marking the completion of a new classroom at the Basak Elementary School in Marawi during a visit on March 1. The new classroom, built as part of the humanitarian assistance programs of the 24th annual Balikatan, was provided with new desks, supplies and other furnishings from the non-governmental organization 3P Foundation USA, headed by Andy de Rossi.. The Balikatan 2008 humanitarian assistance programs in Marawi included free medical, dental and optometric care to over 800 local residents.
Ambassador Kristie Kenney is greeted warmly by children and parents at the Basak Elementary School who availed themselves of the free medical, dental and optometric care that joint teams of Philippine and U.S. military personnel provided to over 800 Marawi residents as part of the 24th Balikatan exercises. During a visit to Marawi on March 1, the Ambassador also cut the ribbon at the school’s new classroom, which was constructed as part of Balikatan’s humanitarian assistance programs.

Bai Omera Dianalan Lucman, President of the Philippine Muslim Women’s Council greets Ambassador Kristie Kenney on her arrival on March 1 to join the council in a discussion on the progress of the Lake Lanao preservation projects and their action plan. The USAID-funded Environmental Governance (EcoGov) Project provided support to the council in October 2006 to conduct a stakeholder conference to develop an action plan for the protection and conservation of Lake Lanao.

Ambassador Kristie Kenney signs as witness to an agreement awarding a grant to the Mindanao State University (MSU) for the improvement of the ablution facilities or washing area and waste management practices at the Masjid Hidaya Mosque. During a visit to the campus, the Ambassador also turned over to local leaders the Al Khalifa (Man as Steward of Earth’s Bounties), a USAID-supported source book for guiding Muslim communities on improved environmental management.
