Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones Visits Balikatan Humanitarian
Assistance Project in Palawan’s Balabac Island

Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones helps mount a marker on one of the two newly constructed classrooms at the Balabac National High School during his March 3 visit to Palawan. Looking on is Balabac Island Mayor Shuaiv Astami. The engineering project, which included repairs on old school buildings, was part of the 24th annual Balikatan humanitarian assistance program conducted in various locations in Mindanao, Palawan and some areas in Luzon. The Balikatan team also provided free medical and dental care to approximately 2,500 island residents.
Students from Balabac National High School greet U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones and his party who visited on March 3 to look at the completed Balikatan engineering projects in the island. The projects, which included construction of two new classrooms and repairs on old school buildings, were part of the 24th annual Balikatan humanitarian assistance program conducted in Mindanao and Palawan and elsewhere in the Philippines. Approximately 2,500 island residents also received free medical clinic and dental care.
Calm waters fronting houses that hug the shores, with lush trees and blue skies in the background, a common scene in Palawan’s southern island of Balabac. The majority of U.S. government assistance to the province is focused on protecting and preserving its maritime resources including the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. U.S. Deputy of Mission Paul Jones visited Balabac island on March 3 to look at humanitarian assistance projects that joint teams of U.S. and Philippine soldiers completed as part of the the 24th annual Balikatan exercise.
Deputy Chief of Mission is briefed by senior police officials about their activities in Palawan at the tourist boat terminal on the Santa Lourdes Pier. The U.S. government is working with Palawan’s police to strengthen its maritime unit and to increase its capability in targeting and interdicting criminals. Mr. Jones also visited Palawan’s Balabac Island on March 3 to view the completed humanitarian assistance projects of joint U.S. and Philippine military personnel participating in the Balikatan exercises.
