Ambassador Kenney Visits US-Philippines Balikatan 2008
Humanitarian Program in Jolo

Schoolchildren welcome Ambassador Kristie Kenney to Barangay Tandu Batu in Luuk, Sulu during her trip to Mindanao on February 19 to meet residents and local officials and visit one of the humanitarian assistance projects being undertaken by Filipino and American soldiers participating in Balikatan 2008.

The engineering project is part of the humanitarian assistance program being conducted by Philippine and U.S. troops in Mindanao and Palawan. Balikatan 2008 joint military teams are also conducting free medical, dental and veterinary care clinics as well as construction and repair of other community facilities.

Later that day in a radio interview, Ambassador Kenney remarked how enthusiastic and pleased the local officials and midwives were to get their facility renovated. The engineering project is part of the humanitarian assistance program being conducted by US and Philippine troops in Mindanao and Palawan as part of this year’s joint military exercises.

Ambassador Kristie Kenney is welcomed by local residents in Barangay Asturias, Jolo, where she participated along with local officials in a turnover ceremony of a water reservoir constructed with USAID assistance that will supply safe and convenient water six barangays in the low lying areas of Jolo.

Constructed with U.S. government assistance, the P1.7-million water reservoir will serve Barangay Asturias’ 13,500 residents and another 40,000 residents in Jolo’s low-lying communities.
