Ambassador Kenney Visits “Tuna Capital” General Santos, Inaugurates Maritime Intelligence Center

General Santos City Mayor Pedro Acharon, Jr. helps U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney shop for fresh tuna at the city’s public market. The city boasts the country’s highest daily fish landings and is the leading producer of sashimi grade tuna. Its busy public market, however, generates 80 tons of wastewater each day and adds to the pollution of the Sarangani Bay. Earlier Ambassador Kenney and Mayor Acharon signed an agreement for a USAID-funded wastewater treatment plant that will help protect the environment in and around the city. Ambassador Kenney greets the students of the UCCP Pag-ibig Christian School in Lagao, General Santos City. She participated along with the students in a U.S. sponsored program - Drug Abuse Resistance and Education (D.A.R.E.). D.A.R.E. is a highly acclaimed program that was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles. It is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children in grades 5-6 and 7-8 how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. The Ambassador also met with local police officers who run the D.A.R.E. classes in the city.
