U.S. Marines and Ambassador Kenney Bring Holiday Cheer to Philippine Friends

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Lt. Gen. Richard Zilmer (left), Commander of the U.S. Marines from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) bring holiday cheer to children at the Our Lady of Peace Mission Hospital in Paranaque, Metro Manila, on December 10. More than 18,000 pounds of clothing, toys and other gifts were distributed as part of the U.S. Marines' "Operation Goodwill" this year. The men and women of the III MEF also distributed gifts for communities near Basa Air Base in Pampanga and Puerto Princesa in Palawan on December 8, continuing a practice that started in 2003 when U.S. Marines, service members and their families in Okinawa, wanted to give back to the communities that had been so welcoming to them during joint military exercise operations.

The U.S. Marines band of III MEF entertains the children by playing Christmas carols at the Philippine Navy Forces West Headquarters in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan where U.S. Marines distributed toys and other gifts to the children and their families as part of the U.S. Marines Corps' "Operation Goodwill" on December 8. The charitable activity, which started in 2003 by U.S. Marines and sailors and their families based in Okinawa, as a gesture of friendship to help children in need and to help the institutions that care for them.
