Ambassador Kenney Hikes Ifugao’s Rice Terraces and Meets Cultural Heritage Preservation Experts

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers hike the trails of the rice terraces in Hapao village, Hungduan Municipality, Ifugao Province, during a visit on December 6. During the visit, the Ambassador met with Ifugao Governor Teodoro Baguilat, Banawe Mayor Lino Madchiw, and Peace Corps Volunteers and community leaders in Kiangan and Asipulo, and spoke at the U.S. Government-funded conference of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Banaue, Ifugao, Northern Luzon.

With the rice terraces as a backdrop, U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney talks to reporters during a visit to Ifugao Province's Hapao village on December 6, on the need to rehabilitate and repair the terraces in Banaue and the rest of the Province. The centuries-old Banaue rice terraces have been placed on the UNESCO list of endangered cultural sites. The U.S. Government, through the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation, funded a conference of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Banawe, Ifugao, to discuss the preservation of the Banawe rice terraces.
Ambassador Kristie Kenney meets Filipino and foreign delegates to the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) at their meeting in Banaue, Ifugao. The U.S. Government, through its Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) program, funded the December 5-7 conference ICOMOS in Banaue. The Ambassador spoke at the conference where experts discussed the preservation of traditional landscapes worldwide and measures for the preservation of the Banaue rice terraces. The seven-year old AFCP program has provided $9.5 million for preservation grants in 199 countries worldwide.
