U.S. Unveils New $5 Note
The U.S. Government unveiled a newly designed $5 note in Washington, D.C. The new design of the $5 note is the fourth in the latest series of redesigned U.S. Federal Reserve notes. The series began with the introduction of a new $20 notes in 2003, followed by a $50 note in 2004 and a $10 note in 2006.
The introduction of the new dollar notes are part of the U.S. Government’s campaign against counterfeiting. Two additional watermarks and an embedded security thread were added as part of the new $5 notes’ enhanced designs and security features. Like past denominations, the new $5 bill will also feature larger numbers in designated areas to help those with visual impairments to distinguish the denomination as well as a subtle background of colors and symbols of American freedom. The $5 note will retain the recognizable portrait of President Lincoln and the Lincoln Memorial.
The new $5 notes will have no effect on those $5 notes currently already in circulation. As is the case with all currency designs, both the new notes and old notes always maintain their full face value.
The new $5 notes will be issued to the public in early 2008.
