Peace and Development in Mindanao
The American people pledged up to $190 million in assistance to the Philippines over the next five years to promote economic development and strengthen the foundations of peace in Mindanao. Under the Mindanao Peace and Development (MPAD) Agreement, the Philippine and U.S. governments will continue working together to improve the lives of the people of Mindanao by developing infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities.
On Wednesday, September 19, the Philippine and U.S. Governments signed the MPAD Agreement at Malacañang Palace. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie A. Kenney presided at the signing ceremony, which was attended by government, private sector and civil society leaders from across Mindanao.
“The American people are proud to work alongside our Filipino partners to help bring peace and prosperity to Mindanao; improve the lives of Mindanao families; and support the overall development of the Philippines," Ambassador Kenney commented before the ceremony.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO) will oversee implementation of activities under the MPAD Agreement.
