U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones Turns Over Barangay Libi Footbridge to Saranggani Local Officials

U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul W. The bridge, funded by U.S. assistance, facilitates year-round movement of some 7,000 residents of Barangay Libi and nearby barangays, and reduces the cost of transporting their farm products to market.
U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul W. Jones (left) delivers his remarks at the turn-over ceremony for the Libi footbridge, noting that aside from serving an economic purpose, the footbridge demonstrates that "the partnership between a community and our two governments - mutually committed to peace and prosperity in Mindanao - can achieve true progress and real results." The footbridge is one of the 822 community-level impact infrastructure projects that the United States is constructing in the Southern Philippine region through the Growth with Equity in Mindanao-2 (GEM-2) Program.

Joining them are Barangay Libi Chairman, Mateo Maguan (left) and Sarangani Vice Governor, Steve Solon (partly hidden, second, left). The footbridge is one of the 49 U.S.-funded Barangay Infrastructure Program projects completed in the Sarangani Province. During rainy seasons before the footbridge was constructed, the river's high water level, cut off Barangay Libi from the rest of the province, forcing students to miss classes, and preventing the transport of farm goods to market.
