U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte Turns Over Goods
to Manila High School

On behalf of the U.S. Navy, visiting former U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines John D. Negroponte, who is currently the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, joined U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney to turn over to the students and teachers of Manila High School equipment and supplies to help modernize their school facility.
The donation includes more than 1,500 text books, science lab equipment, tables, and chairs. These items were sent to the Philippines by U.S. Navy sailors and their families based in Guam as a gift to highlight the continued friendship between our two nations. Pictured above by a selection of schoolbooks is Manila High School Principal Arnulfo Empleo, Manila City Mayor Alfredo Lim, Deputy Secretary Negroponte, and U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney.
“The American people have a special connection with Manila High School, where several of the American teachers known as Thomasites taught in the early 20th century,” said Deputy Secretary Negroponte. “This donation is one example of the many humanitarian projects the U.S. military continues to carry out in the Philippines, in the spirit of friendship and partnership.”
In February 2007, U.S. Navy sailors from the USS Blue Ridge cleaned and created new classrooms at Manila High School, since large parts of the school were damaged by typhoons in 2006.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the students and faculty of Manila High School,” said Ambassador Kenney. “I know that Ambassador Negroponte is excited to visit Manila, which he considered his home for many years. There is no better way for him to express his admiration for and love of the Filipino people than this opportunity to turn over items that will directly benefit students.”
