Embassy Youth Camp Stresses Interfaith Understanding, Teaches Students to Lead by Example

The U.S. Embassy sponsored a three-day interfaith youth camp for 60 student leaders from Muslim, Christian, and indigenous communities. Titled "Building Youth Leadership to Transcend Cultural Boundaries," the camp emphasized leadership training and interfaith dialogue. Students visited the San Pedro Cathedral Parish, the Muslim Ecoland Center, and the Davao City Four Square Gospel Church to learn about the nature of and similarities between religions and their ethical teachings, to encourage interfaith cooperation and learning.
Following a short improvisation exercise, interfaith camp facilitator Susana Anayatin leads her group in a discussion on the meaning of culture and how culture affects the way we interact with others. Understanding culture served as a starting point in supporting the U.S. Embassy-sponsored interfaith youth camp's theme: "Building youth leadership to transcend cultural boundaries." The U.S. Embassy sponsored the three-day interfaith youth camp for 60 student leaders from Muslim, Christian, and indigenous communities.
One of the activities at the U.S. Embassy-sponsored youth camp "Building Youth Leadership to Transcend Cultural Boundaries" is called the Integrity Ball, which helps students better understand ethical decision making. The summer camp program consisted of presentations on the nature of and similarities between religions and their ethical teachings, in combination with games and practical exercises. The activities served to challenge the students' views of those from different cultures and to refine their ability to separate facts from opinion and prejudice.
