USS Peleliu Departs Philippines after Successful Pacific Partnership Humanitarian Mission

A U.S. Navy doctor smilingly demonstrates to a young child how to stick out her tongue so her throat can be checked during a free medical clinic offered by the U.S. Navy and its local partners during the goodwill visit of the USS Peleliu to the Philippines. The ship's Pacific Partnership mission was completed on July 11 after U.S. Navy sailors, private non-governmental organization doctors, and third-national partners spent one month in the Philippines providing free health clinics for citizens; building and improving houses, schools, and hospitals; and delivering donated goods such as clothes, toys, food, and medical supplies.
As local children watch, two U.S. Navy sailors inventory construction material that will be used to build a new classroom at a school in Cotobato City, Mindanao. The sailors were in the country with the USS Peleliu, which is currently underway in support of Pacific Partnership, a four-month humanitarian assistance mission to Southeast Asia and Oceania that will include specialized medical care and various construction and engineering projects. The ship visited the Philippines for one month.
Students and teachers stand by their newly constructed kindergarten building at the Datu Andong School in Cotobato. The school was built during the Pacific Partnership mission of the USS Peleliu. U.S. Navy sailors teamed up with soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines to complete the new school. Pacific Partnership brought together the U.S. military, non-governmental organizations, and third-national professionals in a humanitarian mission to demonstrate the generosity and humanity of people working together to establish a secure and stable tomorrow.
U.S. Navy Seabees and Sailors joined partners from the Armed Forces of the Philippines to clear thousands of tons of dirt and debris from a portion of the Tagas River in Tabaco City, Bicol Region. This flood control effort - one of many humanitarian projects the U.S. Navy conducted during their "Pacific Partnership" goodwill mission - comes as a response to typhoon-spawned landslides that clogged the river late last year. Clearing the debris from the river will prevent the riverbanks from overflowing and flooding the communities that live alongside the river's edges, helping to protect their homes and livelihoods and avoid water-borne diseases.
A U.S. Navy medical specialist checks the stitches of a small child who received free cleft pallet surgery onboard the USS Peleliu. The child was among a group of Filipino patients who were airlifted to the ship's onboard surgical facilities during the USS Peleliu's month-long goodwill visit called Pacific Partnership. For this deployment, Peleliu was configured with special medical equipment and a robust multi-specialized medical team of uniformed and civilian health care providers to provide a range of services ashore as well as on board the ship. The San Diego-based ship can support a variety of medical, dental and preventive medicine services.
Children on Jolo Island watch as a U.S. Navy sailor builds new desks for their school. As part of the USS Peleliu's goodwill mission to the Philippines, the U.S. Navy sailors teamed up with soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines to build a new school for the children of Jolo. The USS Peleliu also provided free health clinics for citizens and delivered donated goods such as clothes, toys, food, and medical supplies.
During a break, a U.S. Navy sailor working on Jolo Island plays a game of soccer in the rain with local children. U.S. Navy sailors visited Jolo as part of the Pacific Partnership mission, which brought U.S. Navy sailors, private non-governmental organization doctors, and third-national partners to the country for one month to provide free health clinics for citizens; build and improve houses, schools, and hospitals; and deliver donated goods such as clothes, toys, food, and medical supplies. Projects were completed in the Bicol Region, Cotabato, and Jolo.
Local children sit between two musicians from the U.S. Marine Corps band as they entertain residents of the Honest Anislag Transition Center in Daraga, Albay. More than 50 U.S. Sailors worked with partners from the Armed Forces of the Philippines to build 35 houses at the transition center for families who lost their homes in 2006 typhoons.
