Philippine-American Friendship Day Honored in Bicol Region during Visit of USS Peleliu and Ambassador Kenney

Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney visited the Bicol Region on July 4 during the humanitarian visit of the USS Peleliu, a U.S. Navy ship. On behalf of Project Handclasp, a San Diego-based charity, Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney and U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Douglas Crowder donated to the Simon of Cyrene Children's Rehabilitation and Development Foundation 51 pallets of goods for distribution to communities in the Bicol Region. The donated goods include medical supplies, clothing, bedding, food, kitchen supplies, sewing machines, toys, and sports equipment. Accepting the donation was Dr. Maria Luz Macasinag, President of Simon of Cyrene (center).

The Sailors are here with the USS Peleliu, a U.S. Navy ship visiting the Philippines on a goodwill mission to provide free health clinics for citizens in remote communities and build and improve housing, schools, and emergency shelters.
On Philippine-American Friendship Day, Ambassador Kristie Kenney announced a major new U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) humanitarian program to benefit residents of Albay and Camarines Sur provinces. USAID is giving $5 million in typhoon reconstruction assistance to international NGOs to assist typhoon-affected communities in these areas. The funds will be used to build up to 1,000 new homes and 10 community centers for displaced residents. Pictured signing the Memorandum of Intent for the $5 million donation are Camarines Sur Provincial Governor Luis Raymond Villafuerte; Undersecretary Alicia Bala, Department of Social Welfare and Development; Ambassador Kenney; and Albay Provincial Governor Joey Salceda.

Save the Children and the International Office for Migration will receive $5 million in typhoon reconstruction assistance from the U.S. Agency for International Development, a major new program announced by Ambassador Kenney on Philippine-American Friendship Day. During the announcement event, Governor Salceda proclaimed the Ambassador an "adopted daughter of Albay Province."
More than 50 U.S. Navy personnel have been working at the Honest Anislag Transition Center in the Bicol Region over the last few weeks to build homes for families left homeless by the 2006 typhoons. Through Pacific Partnership, a four-month goodwill mission undertaken by the USS Peleliu, the U.S. Navy is working with Armed Forces of the Philippines engineers and the Daughters of Charity, Sisters of St Vincent de Paul to build 35 new homes. Pictured above is one of the first houses to be finished.

Kenney and U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Douglas Crowder, Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, cut the ribbon on the first homes to be completed at the Honest Anislag Transition Center in Daraga, Albay during a goodwill mission by the U.S. Navy and Armed Forces of the Philippines. Ambassador Kenney and Admiral Crowder are pictured above with a family who is receiving one of the houses, which were built during the visit of the USS Peleliu.
The USS Peleliu, a U.S. Naval ship visiting the Philippines on a regional goodwill mission called Pacific Partnership, is working with partners in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, local governments, and civilian nongovernmental agencies on humanitarian projects to benefit communities in need. At a 4th of July reception in Bicol onboard the ship, Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney and Vice Admiral Douglas Crowder were joined by Bicol Region Governors, Mayors, and other distinguished guests in cutting the cake.
On July 4, Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney co-hosted a reception in Bicol onboard the USS Peleliu, which is in the Philippines on a regional goodwill mission. The event celebrated both the American Independence Day and Philippine-American Friendship Day. Pictured above, guests enjoy dancing to the music of a U.S. Marine Corps Band.
