U.S. Firm Mirant Donates $1 Million to
Bring Electricity to 100 Villages in Mindanao

American power company Mirant recently made a $1 million contribution to a U.S.-supported program to bring electricity to remote villages in Mindanao. This recent act of support exemplifies the partnership of the American people in assisting in development and prosperity program in Mindanao, and adds to the $5 million the Mirant Foundation Fund has already donated to the Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) program, which has provided electricity through solar energy systems to 400 communities in the southern Philippines.

The Mirant Foundation has worked closely with the U.S. Embassy, AMORE, and the Philippine Department of Energy in a collaborative partnership to illuminate the lives of Filipinos in the most remote communities of Mindanao. The new funds will directly benefit the provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, Maguindanao, and the Zamboanga Peninsula.
The AMORE program focuses on providing electricity in order to expand educational possibilities for children, and providing the opportunity for work to be done at night and within homes. The positive results of the combined work of AMORE and its partners demonstrate the significant progress being made towards a brighter future for Mindanao.
