U.S. Navy Ship Begins Community Projects: Engineering, Humanitarian, and Medical Programs to Benefit Thousands

A U.S. Navy construction specialist from the USS Peleliu carefully places a concrete block into place for a house being built in support of "Pacific Partnership," a unique humanitarian mission being undertaken by the U.S. Navy with host nation partners, medical and engineering specialists from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), private charitable groups, and third-country medical personnel. More than 50 U.S. Sailors are working to build 35 houses at the Honest Anislag Transition Center in the Bicol Region for families who lost their homes in 2006 typhoons.

The ship's medical ward sees up to 20 patients daily for routine medical procedures in support of its Pacific Partnership mission, for which the Peleliu has been configured with special medical equipment and a robust multi-specialized medical team of uniformed and civilian health care providers to provide free services ashore as well as onboard the ship.

This flood control effort - one of many humanitarian projects the U.S. Navy is conducting during their "Pacific Partnership" goodwill mission - comes as a response to typhoon-spawned landslides that clogged the river late last year. The USS Peleliu is visiting Manila, the Bicol Region, Cotabato, and Jolo this month, reflecting the longstanding ties between our two countries as well as our continued commitment to work together to assist people in need of humanitarian outreach. The projects being completed during Pacific Partnership include building houses for citizens left those left homeless by typhoons; assisting in flood control projects; repairing hospitals; offering free medical care, including minor surgery; and building or repairing schools.
