U.S. Navy Ship Arrives in Philippines to Conduct Community Projects: Ambassador Kenney Turns Over Donation to DSWD

The USS Peleliu, a U.S. Naval ship visiting the Philippines on a regional goodwill mission called Pacific Partnership, arrived in the Philippines to begin working with partners in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, local governments, and civilian nongovernmental agencies on humanitarian projects to benefit communities in need. To kick off the USS Peleliu's visit, Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney and Commodore Bruce Stewart (center), head of the Pacific Partnership deployment, were joined by distinguished Philippine officials in cutting a welcome cake during a reception onboard the ship in Manila.
At a June 18 ceremony in Manila, Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney and Commodore Bruce Stewart (far left), head of the USS Peleliu's Pacific Partnership deployment, present Secretary of Social Welfare and Development Esperanza Cabral a donation of goods for remote Filipino communities in need. Undersecretary of National Defense Ernesto Carolina (far right) officially welcomed the USS Peleliu to the Philippines during the event. The donated items were collected by Project Handclasp, a San Diego-based charity, and transported to the Philippines by the U.S. Navy. The 11 pallets of goods donated included medical supplies, clothing, toys, and livelihood and sports equipment.

The projects being completed during Pacific Partnership include building houses for citizens left those left homeless by typhoons; assisting in flood control projects; reparing improving hospitals; offering free medical care, including minor surgery; and building or repairing schools.

The U.S. Marine Forces Pacific Band played during a reception onboard the USS Peleliu in Manila. The band is deployed with the ship for its regional goodwill tour of the Pacific region, and will serve as musical ambassadors during the ship's humanitarian projects. The band is also giving four free public concerts in Manila.
