Volunteer Julia Campbell and Peace Corps
Receive Award from President Arroyo in June 11 Ceremony
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo bestowed a posthumous award on U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer Julia Campbell in a ceremony at Malacanang Palace on June 11. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney and current Peace Corps Volunteer Josh Corbett, one of Ms. Campbell’s batchmates, accepted the Order of the Golden Heart on her behalf (pictured above, left).
Ms. Campbell served in ecological and educational projects in Southern Luzon since she began her Peace Corps service in the Philippines in March 2005. She died in April 2007 while hiking in Banaue, Ifugao Province, Northern Luzon.
The President also bestowed the Order of the Golden Heart with the rank of Grand Cross upon the U.S. Peace Corps organization. The award was accepted by Karl Beck, the U.S. Peace Corps’ Country Director for the Philippines (pictured above, right).
“Today is a real honor for all of us – my colleagues in the Peace Corps, those back home and those who work here in the Philippines, and the 8,000 volunteers who have worked here before,” said Ambassador Kenney. “We are honored to have the chance to continue the work done by a colleague who unfortunately is no longer with us.”
Also attending the ceremony were Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto Romulo, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Hermogenes Esperon, Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Calderon, and staff of the U.S. Peace Corps in the Philippines.
There are approximately 130 Peace Corps Volunteers serving in the country. More than 8,000 Volunteers have served in the Philippines since 1961, making it the second oldest Peace Corps program in the world.
