Ambassador Kenney Views U.S. Programs for Community Development in Zamboanga; Visits CARAT Exercises

Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Zambaonga City Mayor Celso Lobregat read the story "Inang Bayan's New Clothes" to a group of students in the remote Muslim island community of Pangapuyan. The children's story, written by two local staff members of the U.S. Embassy in Manila, stresses understanding and tolerance among the diverse cultures and communities of the Philippines.

The footbridge was built with development assistance from the American people, and replaces a bridge constructed in 1946. The Ambassador toured several U.S.-funded projects for development in the Zamboanga area during her May 31-June 1 visit to the city.

Ambassador Kristie Kenney attended a roundtable discussion on tax collection with Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat and local business leaders. Zamboanga City is one of 16 Mindanao cities participating in USAID's and The Asia Foundation's Transparent and Accountable Governance (TAG) Project, where participating cities have committed themselves to enacting specific governance reforms to improve services and reduce corruption.
Ambassador Kenney joined Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat in cutting the ribbon on the new 30-meter long pedestrian Tumaga Hanging Footbridge, which was built by the American people so residents can safely and easily cross the Tumaga River and improve their access to needed health, social and economic services in the town center.
