Continue the Fight for Freedom and Democracy, Says U.S. Ambassador at American Memorial Day Ceremony

American and Filipino flags were planted at more than 17,000 gravesites at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial to mark the annual Memorial Day holiday, which honors those who gave their lives so we can live today in freedom.
U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie A. Kenney, accompanied by Col. Matthias Velasco, Chief of the Joint U.S.-Military Assistance Group, and Col. Bruce West, U.S. Embassy Defense Attache, pay respects at one of more than 17,000 graves at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial following a ceremony on May 27 to mark the annual Memorial Day holiday.
U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney spoke during a May 27 ceremony to commemorate Memorial Day at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. "Our words should not be the only way that we honor the memory of those brave young men and women who have died in the line of duty," she said. "Our actions can carry an even stronger message: You did not die in vain, we say each time we make progress in the global fight for freedom and democracy."

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is an annual day of remembrance for those who have died in the service of the United States of America throughout its history.
