U.S. Government Congratulates Philippine National Red Cross
on World Red Cross Day
The United States Government and the American people extend their heartfelt congratulations on World Red Cross / Red Crescent Day to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) for 60 years of dedicated service. This past year has reinforced the critical role of the Red Cross in saving lives and reducing human suffering resulting from natural disasters. From the deadly landslides in Southern Leyte in February 2006 to the series of typhoons that devastated Bicol and other parts of the country late last year, the Red Cross helped hundreds of Philippine communities on their paths to recovery.
This year’s World Red Cross / Red Crescent Day highlights the importance of international partnerships in addressing disaster relief and humanitarian issues. The United States is especially pleased to partner with Philippine National Red Cross, with a membership network comprising seven million volunteers, or well over five percent of the entire Philippine population. These volunteers give generously of their time, energy, resources, and compassion.
As a new typhoon season approaches and dangers persist from the forces of nature, the dedicated men and women of Red Cross are preparing for the next disaster and taking every possible step to ensure that those affected will be cared for properly. For its commitment to others, the American people salute the Philippine National Red Cross PNRC on World Red Cross / Red Crescent Day.
