Through a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Government, the American people are helping reduce the risk and impact of natural disasters to families and communities in Southern Leyte.
Threatened by typhoons, earthquakes, volcanoes, and flooding, Southern Leyte is among the most disaster-prone provinces in the Philippines. That is why the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has partnered with the Save the Children Foundation to help the province of Southern Leyte better prepare for future calamities.
Programs funded by the $100,000 USAID grant will bring disaster preparedness education into elementary schools and strengthen the ability of the Provincial Disaster Coordination Council to coordinate disaster preparedness activities and deliver relief and recovery assistance.
USAID and Save the Children worked with Office of Southern Leyte Governor Rosette Y. Lerias, the Department of Education, PAGASA, and local school teachers and officials to develop disaster guidebooks for elementary school students. Elementary schools in six municipalities in Southern Leyte will incorporate "My Little Book on Disaster Preparedness" (pictured above) into their regular curriculum this upcoming school year beginning in June.
Students also participated in a USAID-supported summer camp on disaster preparedness.
