Medical Care, Construction Projects the Focus of "Balikatan 2007" RP-U.S. Military Exercises

A U.S. Navy construction specialist and Philippine Marine work together to build a new school in the village of Taglibi, Jolo Island during Balikatan 2007. Exercise Balikatan is an annual Republic of the Philippines - U.S. bilateral military exercise that is focusing this year primarily on humanitarian projects in Mindanao, including multiple medical, dental, veterinary, and engineering projects carried out by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and U.S. personnel in cooperation with local governments.
Heavy equipment is offloaded from a ship on Jolo Island for humanitarian construction projects during Balikatan 2007. Balikatan means "shouldering the load together," and is an annual exercise for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and U.S. Military. This year during Balikatan, the U.S. and Philippine militaries are conducting several free medical programs; renovating schools, day care centers, boat ramps, piers, and health clinics; and conducting a road improvement project.
