Cebuanos Welcome USS Blue Ridge as Community Projects Help Hundreds of Residents

Students and their families at Mambaling Elementary School received free medical care, such as immunizations and general health checkups, during a February 13 medical program hosted jointly by medical personnel from the USS Blue Ridge and Philippine Navy, and the local government of Alaska, Cebu, where the school is located. Medical personnel from the U.S. and Philippine Navies man the pharmacy set up during a day-long free medical program for residents in Alaska, Cebu. Hundreds of patients were treated free of charge during the program, which was planned by the USS Blue Ridge, a U.S. Naval ship visiting the Philippines on a goodwill mission, and its partners in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and local government.

Personnel from the U.S. and Philippine Navies conducted minor construction work at both the Lo-ac National High School and Elementary School that includes painting; repair of ceilings, doors, and windows; and purchasing chairs. The U.S. Navy also donated goods from Project Handclasp to the school, including sewing machines, books, and sporting equipment, and the 7th Fleet Band played a free concert for the students.
During the visit of the USS Blue Ridge to Cebu, the 7th Fleet Band performed a public concert at SM City Cebu to a standing-room only crowd. The ship's crew also visited Canjulao Elementary School and Tiangue Elementary School in Lapu-Lapu City to assist with much-needed building repairs. The USS Blue Ridge is visiting the country to deliver donated goods such as clothes, toys, food, and medical supplies; provide free health clinics for citizens in poor or remote communities; and conduct engineering projects to improve schools and public buildings.
