Under Secretary of State Karen Hughes Visits Jolo to View U.S.-Supported Programs for Development, Prosperity

Karen Hughes, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, visited Jolo on January 25 to learn about U.S. Government-sponsored projects for development in the region. Under Secretary Hughes talks with young girls living in Maimbung on Jolo Island during her January 25 visit. The children were waiting to get free medical care during a Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) in Maimbung, Jolo. The program offers free health care to area residents and is sponsored by the U.S. and Philippine militaries, in cooperation with local officials.

The school is a participant in USAID's Computer Literacy and Internet Connectivity (CLIC) Project, which donated 10 computers and Internet connections to the school to help the students access learning materials.

Under Secretary Hughes talks with local Maimbung, Jolo residents during her January 25 visit, where she toured U.S.-supported projects meant to give people "the opportunity to achieve their dreams," she said. The Under Secretary noted the achievements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in keeping residents safe from international terrorists. "They are on the front lines and they are sacrificing to protect not only the citizens of the Philippines, but also Americans and people around the world who are interested in peace and stability and confronting the international threat of terrorism."
U.S. officials handed out gifts to children at Maimbung National High School, where the U.S. Military built several classrooms for the students. Under Secretary Hughes visited the school on January 25 visit, where she toured U.S.-supported projects meant to give people "the opportunity to achieve their dreams," she said. "By investing in the lives of people, we are investing in peace and prosperity - in the kind of peaceful development that in the long run will be necessary to sustain progress against terrorism."
