Full U.S. Military Burial Honors for Filipino-American Killed in Iraq
The U.S. Government will provide full military burial honors to Filipino-American U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Richwell A. Doria, who was killed in action by small arms fire while attempting to help evacuate injured U.S. soldiers during an air assault operation on November 7, 2006, near Kirkuk, Iraq. Burial services are being held on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, in Pantal District in Staff Sergeant Doria’s hometown of Dagupan City, Pangasinan.
Staff Sergeant Doria served in Iraq with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 25th Infantry Division, which is based in Hawaii. In recognition of his valor and dedication, Staff Sergeant Doria will receive posthumously the Bronze Star with V device for valor, which is the fourth highest U.S. military award for gallantry in action, as well as the Purple Heart medal. The V device was awarded for his courage as well as his quick and sound decisions under fire, which saved the lives of his squad of soldiers.
U.S. Brigadier General S.G. Trombitas, Commander, Special Operations Command, Korea, and a Funeral Honor Guard from the 8th Army Korea will be present along with representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Manila to honor Staff Sergeant Doria and his next of kin.
Staff Sergeant Doria was born in the Philippines on December 6, 1980. He grew up in San Diego, California, and graduated from Samuel F.B. Morse High School in 2000. Staff Sergeant Doria enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 2000. He is survived by his wife, Jasmine K.M. Doria of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; his four-month-old daughter, Jada; his mother, Rosario Doria of Dagupan City, Philippines; his father, Benito Doria of San Diego, California; his sister Rowena Doria of Dagupan City, Philippines; and his sister Zenaida Anderson of San Diego, California.
To respect the wishes of the family in maintaining dignity, solemnity, and peace of mind during this especially difficult time, the media covering this event are asked to refrain from seeking interviews with family members.
