U.S. Embassy Manila Press Release
U.S. Contributes $250,000 to Relief Efforts
in Wake of Super Typhoon Reming
In response to humanitarian needs following the damage in Bicol Region caused by Super Typhoon Reming, the United States is providing urgent disaster relief and assistance to the Philippines.
The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide $250,000 in immediate cash assistance to help the families affected by Super Typhoon Reming. USAID will provide funds to relief organizations to procure emergency commodities, such as blankets, plastic mats, mosquito nets and cooking utensils, to assist ongoing relief efforts in the Bicol Region. This U.S. assistance will also help finance the distribution of seeds to families whose crops were damaged by the typhoon, as well as a "Food-for-Work" program in Albay to support local government efforts to clear roads and drainage infrastructure of debris. A relief flight carrying U.S.-provided supplies such plastic sheeting for shelter, water containers, and family hygiene kits is also expected later this week.
Officials from the U.S. Embassy are working closely with the National Disaster Coordination Council and other partner organizations to identify priority relief needs so U.S. assistance can make the highest impact possible. “The American people are saddened by the tragic loss of life and devastation caused by Typhoon Reming, and we stand ready to help provide relief and assistance in coordination with our Philippine partners,” said U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Kristie A. Kenney.
The U.S. Embassy extends its condolences and sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this disaster. The United States will continue to stand in partnership with the people of the Philippines in addressing the humanitarian needs caused by this natural disaster, and in helping improve the general health and safety of citizens throughout the Philippines.
The United States has been a long-standing partner of the Philippines in disaster relief and response to humanitarian crises. From the U.S. Marines' crisis assistance in Aurora and Quezon provinces after typhoons in 2004, and in southern Leyte after the landslide in February 2006, to emergency assistance following Typhoon Milenyo in September 2006, the American people have been ready and willing to help the Filipino people in their time of need.
