Ambassador Francis Ricciardone demonstrates to students
of Mindanao State University (MSU) Preparatory High School in
Bongao, Tawi-Tawi how to log on to the U.S. Embassy website following
the July 11 launching of the Growth With Equity in Mindanao (GEM)
Computer Literacy and Internet Connection Program at MSU. The
launching, led by Ambassador Wendy Chamberlin, USAID Assistant
Administrator for Asia and the Near East, included a turnover
of five desktop computers, local area network, peripherals and
software. The computers are linked to Internet services available
at MSU’s college department. The USAID-assisted program
is in support of the Department of Education’s efforts to
integrate computer education in schools. Ambassadors Ricciardone
and Chamberlin visited other USAID-assisted activities in Mindanao,
including programs to integrate former rebel combatants, expand
education, promote healthy families, revitalize local economies,
strengthen local governance, and improve the management of natural
resources.

MSU Preparatory High School students in Bongao,
Tawi-Tawi try their hands in surfing the Internet using news computers
provided by the USAID-assisted Growth with Equity in Mindanao
(GEM) Program. The computers are linked to Internet services available
at MSU’s college department. The USAID-assisted GEM Computer
Literacy and Internet Connection Program is in support of the
Department of Education’s efforts to integrate computer
education in schools. The GEM program aims at accelerating economic
growth in Mindanao and at ensuring that the benefits of growth
are widely distributed among the people of the southern Philippine
region.
