U.S. Ambassador Visits Puerto Princesa; Focuses on U.S. Programs to Benefit Palawenos

During U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney's November 3 visit to Puerto Princesa, Palawan, she learned about the "Clean Air for Puerto Princesa" program created by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the City of Puerto Princesa to reduce vehicle emissions from tricycles and improve the city's air quality. U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney visited Puerto Princesa, Palawan on Friday, November 3 to tour U.S.-sponsored programs in Puerto Princesa, meet U.S. Peace Corps volunteers on the island, discuss issues of mutual interest with local government and business officials, and enjoy the beauty of the island's natural resources. U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney met with Commander VADM Danga (3rd from left) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Western Command (WESCOM) to discuss security issues and express gratitude for WESCOM's support of the recent joint amphibious landing exercise between the Philippine and U.S. Navies and Marine Corps that was conducted in Palawan.
During her November 3 visit to Puerto Princesa, Palawan, U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney met with local environmental non-government organizations to learn about their ongoing environmental initiatives, eco-tourism, and sustainable development. Several of the nine U.S. Peace Corps volunteers who are living and working in Palawan also met with Ambassador Kenney during her visit. The U.S. Peace Corps is concentrating on environment and education programs in Palawan; volunteers working in remote municipalities help students, teachers, and communities by adapting alternative teaching strategies and helping them improve their English proficiency. They also conduct classes in using information technology and computers.

Kenney spoke to students and faculty at Western Philippine University (WPU) - Puerto Princesa City Campus, where a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer teaches two undergraduate classes and helps develop the curriculum for some English courses. She also paid a courtesy call on Dr. Concepto B. Magay, President of WPU (at table, far right).

Ambassador Kenney discussed the importance of education and English-language skills with the students; updated the students on U.S. Government programs and partnerships in the Philippines; and even gave advice about job searches for graduating students.
