U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief Visits Cebu, Highlights U.S. Investment and Partnership

U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul W. Jones visited Cebu on October 27. Pictured above, DCM Jones (second from right) talks with Merlyn Albano (far right), the owner of a Well-Family Midwife Clinic that is part of a chain of 149 clinics established with assistance from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The clinics increase the availability of affordable family healthcare and encourage self-sustaining private enterprise. DCM Jones toured the clinic and met with patients, doctors, and barangay officials.
U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul W. Jones (second from left) listens to a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer (standing) describe a program created in partnership with the Department of Education and local government to bring computer skills to young Cebuanos. The U.S. Peace Corps sponsors two Information and Computer Technology Provincial Centers in Cebu City and Compostela that provide training on an innovative technology that extends the life of older computers so schools, local governments, and businesses can spend less resources on technology but gain the same results - leading to improved computer job skills for many Cebu youths.
In a meeting with Cardinal Vidal, the Archbishop of Cebu, U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul W. Jones expressed his admiration for the Cardinal's dedication to the people of Cebu. Pictured above are John Domingo, U.S. Embassy Consular Agent; Mrs. Catherine Jones; Cardinal Vidal; DCM Jones; and a representative from the U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Section. During his October 27 visit to Cebu, DCM Jones also hosted an evening reception for colleagues and partners in the Cebu area, including government and business leaders, non-government organization partners, and media. He also met with business leaders to discuss the economic climate and U.S. opportunities for business partnerships.
U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Paul W. Jones toured the Fairchild Semiconductor - Philippines plant in Cebu, an example of American investment for prosperity on the island. The award-winning plant is one of only three that the Maine-based company operates worldwide, and it employs more than 1,600 Cebu residents. Pictured above at the plant are Mrs. Catherine Jones; DCM Jones; Edwin Semilla, Director of Site Services, Fairchild Semiconductor; Judy Reinke, U.S. Embassy Commercial Counselor; and a representative from the U.S. Embassy Consular Section. During his visit to Cebu, he also visited the U.S. Consular Agency offices, the only office of its kind outside of Manila. The Consular Agency provides excellent customer service to American citizens in Cebu and the Visayas, and hosts an American Corner library for students and teachers to learn more about U.S. culture and institutions.
