American Muslims Urge Inter-Faith Dialogue Among People of All Religions Two visiting American Muslim community leaders and activists, Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat and Ms. Tiye S. Mulazim, visited the Philippines on a week-long trip to engage local audiences on the topic of "Peace and Development through Inter-Faith Dialogue and Civic Engagement." Here, Ms. Mulazim exchanges pleasantries with some of the women in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi who participated in a roundtable discussion. Visiting American Muslim community leader Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat addresses student scholars and women leaders in Sulu and encourages them to play a more active role in achieving peace and development in their province. Imam Arafat and Ms. Tiye S. Mulazim, also an American Muslim leader, traveled throughout Mindanao to speak on "Peace and Development through Inter-Faith Dialogue and Civic Engagement." Their trip was co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and the Philippine Council on Islam and Democracy. Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat and Ms. Tiye S. Mulazim engage women leaders from Cotabato City and Maguindanao, urging them to organize themselves into NGOs in order for them to have a collective voice in advancing the concerns of Muslim women. Imam Arafat and Ms. Mulazim spoke throughout the Philippines with Muslim religious and community leaders, female community leaders, interfaith activists, and Muslim professionals. Ms. Tiye S. Mulazim shares her experience in civic engagement with sectoral leaders of Sulu province. Ms. Mulazim co-founded Shura, Inc., a Maryland firm that provides mental health services to the community at large. She is a former president of the Muslim Women's League in Baltimore City and treasurer of Masjid-ul Haqq. Her trip to the Philippines was co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and the Philippine Council on Islam and Democracy. Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat delivers the Friday Hutbah at Santa Barbara Mosque, the biggest mosque in Zamboanga City. During open forums in Manila, Zamboanga, Jolo, Tawi-Tawi, Marawi, and Cotabato City, Imam Arafat and Ms. Tiye S. Mulazim, two visiting American Muslim leaders, met with Muslim religious and community leaders, female community leaders, interfaith activists, and Muslim professionals to discuss Islam and democracy; the positive results of interfaith dialogue and cooperation; and civic engagement. The visit of two American Muslim community leaders, Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat and Ms. Tiye Mulazim, supported local inter-faith dialogue programs in the country. Here, Imam Arafat delivers a speech on the global context and emerging trend in inter-faith dialogue before a local crowd in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi. This was Imam Arafat's second visit to the Philippines; in September 2005 he toured local universities and met with local leaders to discuss Muslim life in America. Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat joins fellow Muslim religious leaders in Tawi-Tawi headed by Mufti Abdulwahid Inju. At the meeting, Imam Arafat emphasized the critical role that church leaders have in promoting peace through inter-faith dialogue. Ms. Tiye S. Mulazim joins Filipino Muslim women during the Friday noon prayer at Santa Barbara Mosque in Zamboanga City. Ms. Mulazim is the founder of Shura, Inc., which provides mental health services to the community. She is a former president of the Muslim Women's League in Baltimore City and treasurer of Masjid-ul Haqq. She toured the Philippines with fellow American Muslim community leader Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat, who is the Muslim Chaplain for the Baltimore City Police Department and the president of the Islamic Affairs Council of Maryland.
