General Santos Visit Shows American Partnership for Education and Prosperity

Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney is surrounded by welcoming students at Nicolas Barreras National High School in Polomolok, South Cotabato. Ambassador Kenney visited the school during a September 22 trip to General Santos City and officially turned over U.S.-donated computers and equipment to provide access to the Internet. "There's nothing that inspires me more than seeing wonderful young students like yourselves," she told the students. "You are the future of this country. You are the people we count on to make the Philippines as prosperous, as peaceful, and as exciting a place as it should be."
Two students of Nicolas Barreras National High School in Polomolok, South Cotabato show Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney how they have learned to navigate on the Internet using computers donated by the American people. The school is one of nearly 400 in Mindanao that have benefited from the U.S. Agency for International Development's Computer Literacy and Internet Connection (CLIC) program, which provides computers, printers, software, and equipment to connect schools in remote areas to the Internet.

Attending the program with Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney were South Cotabato Provincial Vice Governor Eliordo U. Ogena; Principal Ruth Estacio; and PTCA President Celestina M. Gullim. General Santos City Mayor Pedro Acharon and local dancers (pictured) greeted Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney at the airport on September 22 for her first visit to General Santos City. "I'm thrilled to meet the citizens who work so hard for peace and prosperity here," said Ambassador Kenney. "The American people have supported development in the area for more than a decade, including funding for major infrastructure projects such as the Makar Wharf, the airport, and several major roads. Our partnerships with the people of General Santos have in common one goal: to create prosperity for families here."

Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney joined leaders in General Santos City to discuss the business climate, economic prosperity, and U.S. Government programs for development in the area. Guests included the Philippines' Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, Secretary Jesus Dureza; Mayor Pedro Acharon; Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio; Congressman Arthur Pinggoy; Congressman Irwin Chiongbian; and members of the Chamber of Commerce.
