Ambassador Kenney Visits Tawi-Tawi to Inaugurate Port, Visit Schools Supported by the American People

Ambassador Kenney visited the school to turn over computer equipment as part of USAID's Computer Literacy and Internet Connection (CLIC) program, which connects schools in remote areas to the Internet.

Ambassador Kristie Kenney watches as students from Notre Dame of Bongao High School demonstrate projects they have created on computers which were provided by the United States. The Parent-Teachers Cooperative Association of the school has pledged to raise funds for an additional 15 computers for the students.

The port was upgraded as part of a joint U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and World Bank project that extended the pier to accommodate larger vessels; built a stairway for easy passenger access; and constructed a passenger terminal building. Joining Ambassador Kenney were World Bank program manager Mary Judd and Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, Secretary Jesus Dureza.
At the Bongao Port, Tawi-Tawi inauguration ceremony on July 27, Ambassador Kristie Kenney posed with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alina Romanowski and Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana of the Mindanao Economic Development Council. The newly upgraded port was rehabilitated with funds from both the U.S. Government and the World Bank.
During her July 27 trip to Tawi-Tawi, Ambassador Kristie Kenney visited the Qudwa Cooperative for Women, which conducts job training for area women to promote success and development within the local female Muslim population. The American people have supported the cooperative through the donation of sewing machines.

The U.S. Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines has donated several sewing machines to the cooperative to assist in livelihood training for local women.
At Mindanao State University-Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography, Ambassador Kristie Kenney spoke to student alumni of U.S.-sponsored exchange programs. MSU also boasts an American Studies Resource Center, a U.S. Government program that offers host institutions a permanent collection of books, pamphlets, magazines, and computer resources that provide up-to-date information about American society and culture, government and policies.
